PHILIP WEINSTEIN

Soul-Error

I take the title of my new book of essays--Soul-Error--from Montaigne.  Like him, I explore how we go through our lives incorrigibly reading--and misreading--both ourselves and others.

Since we make our lives our own by imposing images from within onto the outer world, is it any wonder that, as we change, so changes our sense of who we were, who we are, and who we will become?

If the idea of Soul-Error intrigues you,  purchase the book on Amazon, or read an excerpt from Soul-Error below.

PHILIP WEINSTEIN

Philip Weinstein grew up in the South, taught at Harvard and then at Swarthmore, and has written nine books of literary criticism.  Much of his work focuses on William Faulkner, and his Becoming Faulkner received the Hugh Holman Award as the best book published on Southern literature in 2010.

Since then, his writing has turned from a professional audience to a more inclusive one.  His essay "Soul-Error" was chosen for Best American Essays 2020.

That essay has blossomed into his new book of essays, entitled Soul-Error, that explore our gift and our curse: how we stubbornly misread--and creatively reread--ourselves and others as we move through our lives.

I've spent much of my life teaching literature,
writing about it, and speaking about it.
